With a heart for encouraging others, she speaks candidly about her unique journey of being adopted into a white family. While she recalls the challenges—the stares and whispers from onlookers—Alanda never allowed those moments to define her. Instead, she celebrates the gift of having adoptive parents who embraced cultural sensitivity and ensured that her Black identity was reflected, honored, and nurtured in their home.
Today, Alanda uses her story to bring hope, healing, and connection to families navigating similar paths. She has graced stages with a message rooted in authenticity and love, inspiring others to embrace their own stories and create spaces of belonging. This workshop will explore multiculturalism in American society and the impact it has on therapeutic relationships. It addresses attitudes and behaviors that may exist among mental health professionals, which foster barriers to effective clinical practice and inferior provision of services when working with diverse populations. Best practices for developing multicultural competencies to work ethically and effectively with diverse populations will be discussed.
Learning objectives:
Identify how values and beliefs (worldview) impact the therapeutic relationship when working with diverse populations.
Recognize attitudes, behaviors, and emotional reactions that impede client progress and foster barriers to effective provision of services
Acquire knowledge and understanding of relational multiculturalism within the context of multicultural competencies needed to work ethically and effectively with diverse populations
Discuss best practices and research suggestions for acquiring multicultural competence
ABOUT THE SPEAKER: DR. SANDRA K. RICHARDSON
Sandra K. Richardson, Ed.D., LPC, has over 30 years of experience as a professional counselor, counselor educator, and administrator. She serves as a Professor of Professional Counseling and the Director of Assessment for the COTM Graduate Schools at Oral Roberts University. Dr. Richardson is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Approved Supervisor in the state of Oklahoma. She has provided counseling services for youth, adults, and families in community mental health and worked extensively with federal inmates and delinquent juveniles, and was also instrumental in establishing the Tulsa Area Community Intervention Center. Dr. Richardson has traveled extensively to over 25 nations, presenting at conferences and serving culturally diverse populations. She has conducted research assessing the multicultural competence of mental health professionals and is currently focusing on assessing the spiritual formation and development of graduate school students.

Explore the difference between compassion fatigue and burnout while gaining insight into how first responders experience secondary trauma. Participants will learn to identify signs of compassion fatigue, develop coping strategies, and access key resources to support resilience and emotional well-being.
SPEAKER: DAVID BAATAR, M.DIV., M.A., LPC-S, NCC
David Baatar M.Div., M.A., LPC-S, NCC, is a licensed psychotherapist and clinical supervisor with almost a decade of experience at Dayspring Counseling Services, a mental health agency. He earned both his Master of Divinity in Pastoral Care and Chaplaincy and Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Oral Roberts University.
Before joining the agency, he served as a hospital chaplain at Hillcrest Medical Center, providing emotional and spiritual care across the burn unit, emergency room, labor and delivery, palliative care, and ICU departments.
An eclectic therapist, he integrates psychodynamic, CBT, Gestalt, existential, person-centered, and logotherapy approaches. He is EMDRIA-certified, has completed Gottman Level 3 training, and is Board Certified (NBCC) through the National Board for Certified Counselors. His work reflects a deep commitment to holistic healing, authenticity, and resilience.

Dr. Nissi Hamilton is an award-winning child trafficking survivor. She is the recipient of the Foundation of Improvement of Justice Award for her outstanding achievements in improving justice for child trafficking victims, the Profiles in Courage Award presented by the National Prosecutors Association, and the ProtectHer Award. She designed bills in the state of Texas, coined "The Texas S.M.A.R.T Act," after she made it illegal to work in any sexually oriented business at the age of 18; you must now be 21 years of age. She fought ferociously against S.O.B. conglomerates to have them shut down between the hours of 2 am and 6 am in Dallas, Texas. She has been seen on Paramount+ TV series, Never Seen Again, Sports Illustrated, Fox News, Papercity Mag, Unfiltered, and so much more.
She is the CEO and Founder of a non-profit called Nissi's Network Inc., where her vision is protecting our youth and demanding change, and her mission is to create crime reduction solutions to end adultification and human trafficking amongst our youth. Dr. Hamilton has the most extensive urban prevention plan to prevent human trafficking in schools with her youth program called Pumped Up Kicks in partnership with her Grow with Google, BWOSS, Global Tech Bridge Initiative, The Houston 20, Houston Police Department, and Crime Stoppers Houston. Her Tech Against Trafficking movement has taken the nation by storm. Writing human trafficking curriculum for oil and gas corporate giants like Schlumberger, AT&T, and Houston Community College. Dr. Hamilton is a global advisor and network services provider, but she is not your typical consultant; her combination of unmatched expertise with cutting-edge social capital and connections to help clients solve their most complex challenges, navigate change, and shape their future has earned her the title of Expert.

Both Thangkhan and Kimberly Gualnam have been Licensed Professional Counselors for over 10 years. They both have two Master's of Arts with a focus on Christian Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy. Thangkhan and Kimberly felt a calling from God to start Gilead Counseling Center in 2017. They both see Gilead as God’s company and focus on helping those in and outside of our community with counseling, behavior issues, marriage, cultural awareness, and parenting/marriage classes. Both Thangkhan and Kimberly see their work as taking care of others for the Glory of God. They also speak at local churches and teach/lead teacher events within the various school districts in the Tulsa area, and are mentors for Thunderbird Academy. Kimberly is also a board member of Oral Roberts University School of Counseling.

This training is designed to equip clinicians with a deeper understanding of the diversity within Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities, as well as the unique challenges they may face. Participants will explore cultural, historical, and clinical considerations to provide more effective and culturally responsive care.
Through this training, participants will:
Gain an overview of AAPI history in the United States and its impact on mental health
Explore family systems, cultural values, and interpersonal dynamics within AAPI communities
Identify common stereotypes and forms of discrimination affecting AAPI individuals
Recognize less commonly presented symptoms and learn tools to improve diagnosis and treatment outcomes
Discuss strategies to overcome barriers to accessing mental health care in AAPI population
SPEAKER: BLONG LOR, M.S., LPC
Blong Lor is a therapist whom focuses on education and providing therapeutic services to culturally diverse individuals and families throughout Oklahoma. By offering therapeutic services, Blong helps create effective treatment plans tailored to each patient’s situation. Whether working with individuals and/or families, he is committed to helping his clients improve their lives through evidence-based counseling methods and techniques. Blong is particularly passionate about addressing culturally diverse issues. Another area of experience Blong has in helping treat individuals with problematic sexual behaviors. Other areas of experience include working with clients facing challenges such as PTSD, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and depression. Blong also works with individuals struggling with psychosis and individuals experiencing grief.
Blong works collaboratively with his clients to help them navigate these challenges and improve their mental health and overall well-being. Blong’s practice is focused on serving diverse populations, including individuals from LGBTQ+ communities, those in military or veteran groups, and individuals with developmental disabilities.
Outside of his therapeutic work, Blong enjoys finding peace and tranquility in the outdoors, such as hiking and camping. He has a passion for cooking and is always on the lookout for new recipes to try. Blong also enjoys motorcycling, video games, and movies as other notable hobbies. Blong provides mental health services throughout Oklahoma and is fluent in both Hmong and English, offering support to a broad and diverse range of clients.
